@algernon I've integrated your Mastodon Docker backup script into a fully fledged and standalone project called Incognitum [github.com/openspace42/incogni] which supports automated encrypted offsite [S3] backups. It's based on our synthia/dna bash+git framework and it's currently running on this very instance's server with great results! Any thoughts? Interested in writing the restore part collaboratively? Thanks for your work.

For a chain reaction of causes our domain os.vu had expired and we were only now finally able to get it back and working again. From now on we should be ready for ~100% availability in the future.

This instance is now finally working again with MD v2.5.0, S3 storage, working backups, and @os.vu usernames. All of the previous instance's data was lost due to a corrupt backup [tracking issues on GH]. Very sorry about that. You can find your old toots' text by searching google for "md.os.vu @username" [e.g. "md.os.vu @nz"], fetching the cached version, editing the URL to delete anything after "md.os.vu" [e.g. "webcache.googleusercontent.com"], and then pressing "text-only version". Let's do this!

gearbest [baidu translate in action?] password reset link leads to 404, every website "contact us" link leads to a login page, even the one on the help page about not being able to log in, fortunately there's a mobile-only chat support page indexed on google, and when you tell them about your issue and the fact that their website is completely flawed, they answer "ok, is there anything else i can help you with today?". Clearly a company very devoted to customers.

Automation: because sometimes even sysadmins are required to meet the design criteria.

If there's one company that will absolutely become hundred-billionair if not trillionair in the next 20 years it's TSLA, absolutely and most definitely. Scroll their wikipedia page to any line, and there's a genius thing that nobody is doing even thought it's the only logical thing that is coherent with space-time in the entire universe of tech and automotive companies. Leverage-long a dip and you'll be in extreme profit next year, and a millionair before 2030 for sure.

As much as I'm sure vaping might be dangerous in and of itself, especially since we have yet to perform any large scale study on it, isn't it obvious that, after a decade of people using e-cigarettes, the alleged disease affecting people *in the last few weeks* and with numbers skyrocketing *in the last few days* has nothing to do with vaping itself? arstechnica.com/science/2019/0

I go to open a bank account in a society where analog, hand written, public/public signature authentication is still a thing. The bank collects several signature samples upon opening the account with a multimillion dollar graphic analysis software they bought instead of investing into a fucking cryptographer. I go to write a check, and the software refuses my signature. The cashier turns the screen around and says: "Sir, your signature is incorrect, this is what I have on file."

Now working on a complete Mastodon backup automation project based on synthia/dna on the shadow of our openspace project raptor. Should be ready in about a week. github.com/openspace42/incogni

[aka a short reminder for those who still think that burning wood is a good idea]

How is it that 30% of Icelanders have guns and only one person has ever been killed by one in their entire known history, and yet it's guns that kill people?
